How accurate are national grid restoration times? ›

We will work as quickly as possible to get you back up and running. Estimating the time of power restoration is not an exact science. Work volume, the cause of the outage, and the extent of the damage can all affect our time estimates. Storms can cause widespread damage to our entire distribution system.

In most cases, water heaters require electricity to function. Without power, you might end up with a cold shower. If you're comfortable with cold water, this might not be an issue, but if not, it's best to wait until the power is restored.

At the start of a storm or outage, estimated restoration times may be listed as “assessing conditions.” This is because the damage to our infrastructure must be assessed and reported prior to any restoration taking place. During a storm there can be a significant number of locations that crews must visit and survey.

If it is dark, stormy or foggy, weather conditions can make this process longer and harder for our linemen. Once they locate the cause of the outage, the linemen verify again that the line is not energized before installing grounding devices on the line to ensure their safety.

The National Union of Electricity Employees said the national grid has been restored after the Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress suspended their strike. NUEE National President, Adebiyi Adeyeye, confirmed this to PUNCH Online in an interview on Tuesday.

What are the disadvantages of the National Grid? ›

One disadvantage of the national grid is that there is energy wasted (through heat loss to the surroundings) when electric currents flow through cables. The longer the cables are, the greater the energy loss. The challenge is to reduce these losses.

Outages can happen as a result of damage to equipment or failure of markets involved in the generation, transmission, or distribution of electricity from remote locations to where it is used. Outages can also occur due to problems on a customer's own property.

However, the three most common causes are natural causes, human error, and overload. Basically, any interruption between power generation and the supply of electricity to homes can cause a power outage.
