Does Barksdale AFB have a school? ›

There are no DoD schools on-base. We have two primary school districts, Bossier Parish and Caddo Parish. They both offer public education for grades K-12. Programs include special programs for the gifted, the learning disabled and the physically challenged.

The DOD DSN operator can be reached at commercial 719-567-1110. Please note long distance charges may be incurred. Barksdale AFB has two DSN prefixes 781 and 331. The 781 prefix will get you in touch with those offices whose commercial phone number begins with 456.

Satellite images show that the Navy has begun construction of a new nuclear weapons storage and handling facility at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana. The construction of this facility is part of a larger effort by the U.S. Air Force to expand the number of strategic bomber bases that can store nuclear weapons.

Barksdale is an award-winning base that is home to warrior Airmen of the 2nd Bomb Wing, Air Force Global Strike Command, 8th Air Force, 307th Bomb Wing, and a host of mission partners dedicated to providing nuclear deterrence, combat power and combat support anytime, anywhere!

Barksdale AFB occupies more than 22,000 acres (89 km²) east of Bossier City and along the southern edge of Interstate 20. More than 15,000 active-duty and Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC) members serve at Barksdale.

As commander the 2nd Bomb Wing, he believes it is “the greatest airplane ever built.” The population of the 27,000-acre Barksdale AFB is about 14,500 and “the military is a family business,” so it has to have facilities for entire families.

The 2d Bomb Wing conducts the primary mission of Barksdale Air Force Base, La., with three squadrons of B-52H Stratofortress bombers - the 11th Bomb Squadron, which is the training squadron, the 20th Bomb Squadron and the 96th Bomb Squadron.
