What steel is good for punches? ›

High strength tool steels are used in punch components and are heat treated to assure uniform characteristics and relieve thermal stresses. The structural strength is also enhanced by the precision grinding process, which minimizes stress concentration. A2- 5% chrome - high performance tool steel.

H-13. H13 is a hot working tool steel, meaning it resists deformation when brought to high temperatures, such as when punching or shaping hot steel in various operations. It is the industry standard for hot punches, drifts, and dies.

To calculate the force to punch holes in metal you determine the cross section in shear and multiply it by the shear strength of the metal. The formula is Perimeter times thickness times shear. For round holes in steel this is Diameter * PI * 30.
