Vegan Brown Gravy Recipe
This vegan brown gravy takes me back to home-cooked dinners of meatloaf and mashed potatoes and Thanksgiving at my grandmother’s house. Like many people, I grew up eating meat and I loved that beefy flavor of a traditional brown gravy. Grandma’s gravy may not have been vegan (it definitely was not) but this gravy tastes just like what she used to make, maybe even better. 😉
The key to making the best vegan brown gravy and achieving that old-school flavor is simply swapping outdated meat-based ingredients for plant-based ingredients made with similar seasonings. This is a gravy even the meat eaters will love; no nutritional yeast or soy sauce here!
The gravy boat shown in these photos was passed down from my mother-in-law over 10 years ago and it has served us well on our Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner tables ever since. It’s such a simple item yet one of the few truly special pieces in my kitchen and it brings me joy every holiday season.
Brown Gravy Ingredients
You will need:
- 2 cups vegan beef-style broth
- 3 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon vegan Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon vegan beef-style bouillon base
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 tablespoon vegan butter
Ingredient Notes
- Vegan Beef-Style Broth – I use Better Than Bouillon’s No-Beef Base mixed with water according to the package directions.
- Cornstarch – To thicken the gravy; all-purpose flour can also be used.
- Vegan Worcestershire Sauce – I use The Wizard’s brand.
- Beef-Style Bouillon Base – I use the No-Beef Base mentioned above straight from the jar.
How to Make Brown Gravy
STEP ONE: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, whisk together the beef-style broth and cornstarch.
STEP TWO: Whisk in the beef-style bouillon base, onion powder, thyme, and black pepper.
STEP THREE: Bring to a simmer, stirring frequently until gravy is slightly thickened, about 5 minutes.
STEP FOUR: Remove from heat and add the butter and continue stirring until melted. Adjust seasoning to taste and serve hot.

Thyme comes ground or in leaves. Which do you use?

Yes, thank you for that question! I use dried thyme leaves for this recipe. The ingredients list has been updated for this clarification.
Tasty vegan brown gravy to complete my holiday planning. Thanks for this yummy recipe.Reply
I do love a drop of gravy, especially with sausages and mash or a roast dinner. Vegan gravy is every bit as good as I remember meat gravy being – if not better. That image of your mashed potato with gravy has made me SO hungry.Reply
