But after two hours and 10 minutes of slow-burn meandering, I was hungry for more meat on these bones. Dec 3, 2022 Full Review Bones and All | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Tamma Moksha The Hindu Filmmaker Luca Guadagnino stays true to the themes of Camille DeAngelis’ book of the same name — and makes a convincing case to extend your love and sympathy to two forlorn teenagers stuck in a rickety car on the roads of ‘80s America. People are more than the moment that we cross their path Jun 8, 2024 Full Review Bones and All | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Damon Wise Deadline Hollywood Daily There is a lot to chew on here, about people who feel disenfranchised, unloved and unwanted. The ending may disappoint, but it also ensures the film will have a life as an imperfect masterpiece, the best kind of cult film, after all. Sep 19, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

leonard b It's a most human story. It's all about the struggle and it isn't pretty Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/05/23 Full Review Hector Very different, more about an unconventional relationship brought about a common bond. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/25/23 Full Review Aleshia M Totally not expected, a little drawn out, still an awesome love story. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Damian M Aside from the overt love story wrapped in horror and gore, the movie also illustrated the importance of following your intuition when a person doesn't seem quite right (as in Sully's character). Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Sam First my man Luca G. imitates 70s editing with Suspiria, now he's moved to imitating the 80s. I could never be more happy.Guadagnino is seriously one of my favorite directors working today, and this movie solidifies him as one of the most diverse as well.Road Trip movies have been dead since the mid 2010s, and it's pretty easy to see why. They mostly feature inexperienced (or negligent) directors who don't have enough creativity to keep the shot composition from looking stale as hell. Granted, a hard thing to do when a lot of your movie is in a car. Another problem is structure. When your movie has a built in road map and the goal of the movie is to get to point B, it's easy to feel like the movie isn't going anywhere unexpected. But Luca G. doesn't give a sh*t about your goddang genre conventions.Every shot look fresh and distinct, not just in terms of composition, but also in terms of setting. The main characters go to some of the most ugly, lame, boring states in America, and somehow they all feel distinct and beautiful in their own separate way.The script constantly keeps you guessing, to the point where I was terrified and ecstatic to see what the next scene had in store for me.Timmy-chan was incredible as always. His character was definitely a slow burn, but once it gets to the scene that ties his character up... Wow.The female lead (sorry I don't know her name) was also fantastic. She feels like a wounded animal, and a hungry predator but the more you read into her performance, it becomes more obvious that she's just a girl trying to figure her sh*t out. There are moments in this movie that would feel laughable and cringe if done by a less convincing performer.Case in point, Timmy-chan's sister. You ever see a performance so bad that you wonder if their character is supposed to be mentally handicapped? I don't know why Anna Cobb was allowed to give a performance this bad. I did not believe a single word her character was saying, and she almost ruined every scene she was in.But aside from that, everything was incredible. This is one of my favorite Guadagnino joints, and I'm so excited to see it in theaters again. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Amber This movie was overall one of the best pictures, due to it's graphic nature i dont recommend to anyone who is sensitive to gore. Other than that, I enjoyed the story line and the portrayal of characters. The acting was some of the best I have seen. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews

FAQs

Why did Maren eat Lee? ›

Sully, who is revealed to be Maren's grandfather, attacks Maren and is planning on killing and eating her, but Lee intervenes, only to be mortally wounded in the process. As an act of love and devotion, and to please Lee, Maren gives in and eats him, "bones and all", a rite of passage for cannibals like her.

Why does Mary eat people in Bones and All? ›

Throughout the novel, Maren consumes several boys and young men who express interest in her, suggesting that her cannibalism is closely tied to her own romantic and sexual desires, even though it also prevents her from intimacy with others.

What happens to Maren at the end of Bones and All? ›

On her own, she is able to discover the truth about Sully and defend herself against him, drive a car across the country, survive for weeks on an abandoned farm, reunite with Lee, and, ultimately, start a new life without him. The ending of the novel marks significant personal changes for Maren.

Has anything got 100% on Rotten Tomatoes? ›

To date, Leave No Trace holds the site's record, with a rating of 100% and 252 positive reviews.

Was Marens dad an eater? ›

Maren's father, Frank (André Holland) is her Black parent. He's also not an “eater.” Parenting her, we learn, has been a matter of attempting to suppress, contain, and control her appetites while shouldering the fiscal, social, legal, and spiritual consequences when that endeavor inevitably fails.

Did she eat him at the end of bones and all? ›

In the book, Maren eats Lee against his will. In the movie, Lee is hurt when he and Maren kill Sully. Maren puts him out of his misery by eating him, at Lee's request. It's tough to say if the Bones And All ending is a satisfying horror movie ending.

What is cannibalism a metaphor for in bones and all? ›

Through Guadagnino's attentive work, cannibalism becomes a metaphor for closeted queerness: a way of dramatizing both the consummate longing and consonant shame of wanting something you shouldn't.

What was Travis asking Maren to do in Bones and all? ›

Travis has in fact been turned down by several eaters, and he begs a horrified Maren to eat him. Travis is one of the most complex and ambiguous characters in the novel. Though he treats Maren with kindness, she is disgusted by his request to be eaten and desires to get away from him as quickly as possible.

What is the deeper meaning of bones and all? ›

There is no true "hidden meaning" at play in Bones and All, it's simply a story about otherness. The beauty of the movie is that cannibalism can be seen as a placeholder for so many things, especially given the '80s setting.

What is the longest film ever? ›

The longest film ever made, according to Guinness World Records, is "The Cure for Insomnia" (1987), directed by John Henry Timmis IV.

What is considered the best movie of all time? ›

Citizen Kane (1941) stood at number 1 for five consecutive polls, with 22 votes in 1962, 32 votes in 1972, 45 votes in 1982, 43 votes in 1992, and 46 votes in 2002. It also topped the first two directors' polls, with 30 votes in 1992 and 42 votes in 2002.

How did Maren become an eater? ›

She was simply born this way, drawn to eat those who crave her, chomping them up, bones and all, until their bodies become a part of her own. This thing Maren does is unacceptable, and yet, for her at least, it is always inescapable.

Was Sully in love with Maren? ›

Before meeting Lee, Maren encounters Sully, whose attraction to Maren is confirmed at the end of the movie. However, Maren never reciprocates the feelings that Sully has for her. Instead, she is extremely cautious around him.

What was the deal with Sully in bones and all? ›

Sully therefore represents a more ethical mode of cannibalism, as he does not kill people and has no “victims,” but rather, only eats those who have already died of natural causes. The first person he ever consumed, he claims, was his own deceased grandfather.
